FAQs
LAPIP (Laser Assisted Peri-Implantitis Procedure) is a specialized laser treatment that saves failing dental implants by eliminating infection and promoting bone regeneration. The PerioLase laser targets bacteria around the implant without cutting or stitches.
Your implants may need LAPIP if you experience bleeding or pus around the implant, swelling, pain, loosening, or bone loss detected on X-rays. Early intervention dramatically improves the chance of saving your implant.
Implant failure is most commonly caused by peri-implantitis, a bacterial infection around the implant site. Other factors include poor oral hygiene, tobacco use, grinding, underlying health conditions, trauma, and inadequate bone quality.
You may be a candidate if you have a failing implant with infection but still have adequate bone support. The earlier peri-implantitis is detected, the better the prognosis. Dr. Bennett will evaluate your implant with cone beam CT imaging to determine if LAPIP can save it.
LAPIP is performed using the PerioLase MVP-7 laser under local anesthesia. The laser is directed between the implant and gum tissue to eliminate bacteria, remove diseased tissue, and stimulate bone regeneration. Most treatments are completed in one or two appointments.
LAPIP treatment typically takes 1 to 2 hours depending on the number of implants being treated and severity of infection. Most patients complete treatment in one or two appointments.
LAPIP has high success rates when peri-implantitis is caught early and patients maintain excellent oral hygiene after treatment. Dr. Bennett will give you an honest assessment of your prognosis during consultation based on the severity of infection and bone loss.
